My MIL Made My Life Miserable After Moving In — Then I Overheard My Husband’s Secret Conversation With Her

My mother-in-law, Linda, moved in with us after her second marriage ended.
My husband, Brian, said she only needed a few weeks to get back on her feet.
I agreed.
But those few weeks turned into four months.
Linda criticized everything I did.
My cooking wasn’t good enough. Our kids had too much screen time. I apparently didn’t clean properly, even though I worked full-time.
Whenever I complained, Brian said, “She’s going through a difficult time. Just be patient.”
Eventually, I told him I couldn’t keep living like this.
He promised to talk to her.
A few nights later, I woke up around midnight and noticed Brian wasn’t in bed.
I went downstairs for water and heard him talking to Linda in the kitchen.
“Listen, Mom. Tomorrow I’m telling my wife everything.”
I stopped.
Then Linda said, “She’ll never forgive you.”
Brian answered, “I know. But I can’t keep lying to her.”
I almost walked in.
Then he explained.
Linda hadn’t been staying because she had nowhere else to go.
Brian had secretly been paying rent on her apartment for two months.
She simply refused to leave because she liked having everything done for her.
He’d been hiding the payments because he’d used our joint savings.
The next morning, I confronted him.
He admitted everything.
Linda moved into her apartment that weekend.
Brian apologized, but we still had a serious conversation about money, honesty, and boundaries.
The problem wasn’t just his mother. It was that he’d allowed me to believe I had no choice.
