A Little Girl Came to My Door Asking for Her Missing Mom — The Next Day, She Showed Me a Photo of My House

A few months after moving into my new house, I heard someone knocking.

A little girl, maybe eight years old, stood outside crying.

“Can you get my mommy? She lives here.”

I explained that I had recently bought the house and didn’t know her mother.

She started crying harder.

“Dad says she’s gone, but this is her house. I remember.”

I asked for her father’s number and called him.

He arrived fifteen minutes later, looking terrified.

He explained that his wife had passed away the previous year. They’d lived in my house before selling it.

His daughter, Lily, had been struggling with the loss.

The next afternoon, they returned together.

Lily showed me an old photograph of herself sitting on my front porch with her mother.

Then she pointed beneath the wooden steps.

“Mommy said she put something there for me.”

Her father looked confused.

We carefully checked beneath a loose board.

Inside was a small waterproof container.

There were birthday cards, photographs, and a handwritten letter.

The letter began:

“My sweet Lily, if you’re reading this, I hope you remember how much Mommy loved sitting on these steps with you.”

Her father started crying.

Apparently, Lily’s mother had prepared the box during her illness.

Lily hugged the letter against her chest.

Before leaving, she asked if she could visit the porch sometimes.

I told her she was always welcome.
