I Overheard My Wife Planning to Leave Me — Then She Revealed What Our Son Had Been Asking Her

My wife, Rachel, and I have been married for sixteen years.
We’ve had our arguments, but I always thought our marriage was reasonably happy.
Yesterday, I was getting ready to pick up our thirteen-year-old son, Ethan, from his airsoft practice.
I was sitting in the hallway putting on my shoes when Rachel started talking on the phone upstairs.
She thought I’d already left.
At first, I wasn’t paying attention.
Then I heard my name.
She was telling her best friend that she was exhausted with our marriage.
“He comes home, eats dinner, watches television, and barely speaks to me,” she said.
I felt awful hearing that.
Then she said something worse.
“I’ve started looking at apartments. I don’t think I can do this anymore.”
I wanted to walk upstairs and confront her.
But then she mentioned Ethan.
“This morning, he asked me if Dad still loves us or if he’s just staying because of him.”
I sat there completely still.
I’d been so focused on work, bills, and everyday responsibilities that I hadn’t noticed how distant I’d become.
When Rachel finished her call, I went upstairs.
I told her what I’d heard.
She started crying.
We talked for almost two hours.
I didn’t try to convince her everything was fine.
It wasn’t.
That evening, we agreed to try marriage counseling.
I still don’t know whether our marriage will survive. But I finally understand that being home isn’t the same as being present.
