My MIL Took My 13-Year-Old Daughter Shopping – She Came Home With Clothes One Size Too Small and Wouldn’t Touch Dinner
Shantel allowed her mother-in-law, Anna, to take her 13-year-old daughter, Ivy, shopping. But Ivy returned unusually quiet, refused dinner, and left all the shopping bags unopened.
After some gentle questioning, Ivy revealed that Anna had bought her clothes that were one or two sizes too small. She told Ivy they would fit by Christmas if she stopped eating desserts and said that “pretty girls have self-control.”
Worse, Anna claimed Ivy should look more like her father Rick’s “new girlfriend,” leaving the girl terrified that her parents were divorcing because she was not thin enough.
When confronted, Rick admitted he had secretly been meeting a woman—but she was a party planner helping him organize a surprise fifteenth-anniversary celebration. Anna had seen them together and wrongly assumed he was having an affair.
Shantel and Rick reassured Ivy that there was no girlfriend and that nothing about her body could ever make them love her less.
Anna later admitted that her own mother had once bought her “goal dresses” and used shame as motivation. She apologized to Ivy for repeating the same cruelty and for involving her in an adult situation.
Ivy set firm boundaries and refused to shop alone with her grandmother again.
The too-small clothes were returned, and Ivy chose a dress that fit comfortably.
