I Spent My Last $60 on Christmas Dinner for My Son — Then My Daughter-in-Law Discovered My Secret

My husband died four years ago, and I’ve been living alone ever since.

I’m 72, and my pension barely covers rent, electricity, and medication.

Some nights, I eat crackers and drink tea instead of making dinner.

I’ve never told my son, Matthew.

He works hard, recently got married, and has enough responsibilities.

This Christmas, he brought his wife, Jennifer, to visit.

I was so excited.

I spent my last $60 buying a small turkey, potatoes, vegetables, and ingredients for Matthew’s favorite pie.

We had a wonderful evening.

After dinner, Jennifer offered to help with the dishes.

While putting away leftovers, she opened my refrigerator.

She stood there silently.

Then she noticed the nearly empty cupboards.

“How long have you been living like this?” she asked.

I tried to laugh.

“Oh, sweetheart, I just haven’t been shopping.”

She didn’t believe me.

Then she said something I’ll never forget.

**”My mother used to pretend she’d already eaten so we wouldn’t know she was hungry.”**

I started crying.

Jennifer hugged me and called Matthew into the kitchen.

For the first time, I admitted how difficult things had become.

The next morning, they returned with groceries.

But Jennifer had another idea.

She suggested we start having Sunday dinner together every week.

“Not because you need help,” she said. “Because we want you there.”

I thought Christmas would be my only proper family dinner that month.

**Instead, it became the beginning of a new tradition.**
