The Wife of My Ex Forced My 16YO to Babysit Their Newborn at Night—So I Took Matters Into My Own Hands

My ex-husband and his wife just had a newborn, and my 16-year-old daughter lives with them. One night, she called me crying, saying she’d been assigned the “night shift” with the baby. Her stepmom told her, “You can’t live here for free—you need to earn it.”

I was furious.

Without thinking it through, I arranged a surprise visit from Child Protective Services the next morning. I wanted someone to step in and stop what I saw as unfair and harmful.

They spoke with everyone but ultimately said there wasn’t enough evidence to take action.

What shocked me most wasn’t just my ex’s reaction—he saw it as a low blow—but my daughter’s. She felt the same.

Now I’m stuck between guilt and concern.

I still believe it’s wrong for a teenager to lose sleep caring for a newborn that isn’t her responsibility, especially with school the next day. But I can’t ignore that involving CPS may have made things harder for her instead of better.

I was trying to protect her—but maybe I acted too fast.

Now I’m left wondering how to stand up for my daughter in a way that actually helps her… without creating more conflict in her home.
