My Husband Vanished When Our Son Was a Baby — Years Later, I Found Something in His Room

My husband disappeared when our son, Mason, was only five months old.
There was no goodbye note, no argument, and no explanation.
Police searched, relatives called everyone they knew, but eventually the trail went cold.
I raised Mason on my own.
When he was little, he started saying something that unsettled me.
He would insist that a “bad man” sometimes came into his room at night.
At first, I thought it was a nightmare.
He was barely old enough to explain what he meant, and I never found any sign that someone had been inside.
Eventually, he stopped talking about it.
Years passed.
Then one Saturday, I decided to move the furniture in his bedroom while repainting.
Behind an old dresser, I found a small metal box.
Inside was a watch, an old key, and several folded notes.
I recognized the watch immediately.
It belonged to my husband.
My hands started shaking.
One note was dated nearly two years after he had supposedly disappeared.
It said:
“I came to see him again tonight. I’m sorry I’m too afraid to stay.”
I called the police.
The investigation reopened, and eventually we learned my husband had left because of serious financial trouble and had been secretly returning to see Mason while I slept.
He hadn’t vanished completely.
He had been closer than I ever imagined.
