My In-Laws Kept “Forgetting” Their Wallets After I Inherited Money — So I Came Prepared to Dinner

After my mother died, she left me a modest inheritance.

I used most of it to pay off debts and put the rest into savings.

My in-laws never directly asked me for money.

But suddenly, whenever we went out to eat, they conveniently forgot their wallets.

And somehow, they always picked expensive restaurants.

The first few times, I paid without complaining.

Then I started noticing a pattern.

Last Saturday, my father-in-law suggested a fancy steakhouse.

Before leaving their house, I noticed both their wallets sitting on the living room couch.

I quietly pointed them out to my husband.

He understood immediately.

Without saying anything, he picked them up and slipped them into his jacket.

At the restaurant, his parents ordered appetizers, expensive steaks, wine, and dessert.

The bill came to $320.

My mother-in-law reached into her purse.

“Oh goodness! We forgot our wallets again!”

I smiled.

“Actually, you didn’t.”

My husband pulled both wallets from his jacket and placed them on the table.

“You left these on the couch. I brought them for you.”

His mother’s face turned bright red.

His father stared at the table.

Then my husband added, “We’ve paid for the last four dinners. Tonight, everyone covers their own meal.”

They weren’t happy.

But they paid.

On the drive home, my husband started laughing.

Funny how they haven’t forgotten their wallets since.
