The Truth Behind My Ex-Wife’s Phone Call

When my former wife, Natalie, called me late one evening, I could barely understand her through the crying.
“Our son is gone,” she said.
My entire body went numb.
Our five-year-old, Owen, had spent that week with her. I immediately asked which hospital I needed to go to.
Natalie hesitated.
Then she said something that made no sense.
“There’s nothing you can do. We already took care of everything.”
I demanded answers, but she hung up.
For hours, I called hospitals, relatives, even local funeral homes.
Nobody had any record of Owen.
The next morning, I received a message from Natalie’s husband, Chris.
“Please don’t call her yet. Owen is safe.”
Attached was a recent photo of my son sleeping on a couch.
I nearly dropped my phone.
Chris explained that Natalie had secretly planned to leave the state and start over with Owen. She believed that if she convinced me something tragic had happened, she could buy enough time to disappear before I realized the truth.
Chris had discovered airline tickets and packed suitcases hidden in their garage.
He refused to go along with it.
While Natalie was asleep, he took Owen to his mother’s house and contacted me.
I drove there immediately.
When Owen saw me, he ran across the room and wrapped his arms around my neck.
Authorities became involved that same day, and the custody agreement was urgently reviewed.
I had spent one night believing I had lost my child forever.
Instead, I learned how close I had come to losing him for an entirely different reason.
