A 16-Year-Old Boy Wore a Cartoon Costume to Take His 6-Year-Old Neighbor Trick-or-Treating – But at One House, She Stopped and Said, ‘This Is Why I Asked You to Wear It’

I’m 16, and I Agreed to Wear a Cartoon Costume for My 6-Year-Old Neighbor on Halloween — But When We Reached One House, She Whispered, “This Is Why I Asked You to Wear It.”

I had plans to attend a Halloween party, but my mom insisted I take our six-year-old neighbor, Ellie, trick-or-treating.

Ellie loved Paw Patrol. She wore a pink Skye costume and convinced me to dress as Chase, complete with ridiculous floppy ears.

I was embarrassed, but she was thrilled.

As we walked, Ellie kept checking house numbers and asking to go farther.

Finally, we stopped outside a dark house.

“Ellie, there’s no candy here,” I said.

She grabbed my hand.

“This is why I asked you to wear it.”

Suddenly, the porch light turned on.

A man opened the door, holding cupcakes. Behind him stood a woman and a little girl.

“Daddy?” Ellie whispered.

My heart sank.

Her father, Steven, had promised to take her trick-or-treating dressed as Chase. Instead, he’d claimed he had to work.

But there he was, celebrating Halloween with his girlfriend and her daughter.

“I thought if Daddy saw Chase, he’d remember,” Ellie whispered.

Steven tried explaining, but Ellie only wanted to go home.

I held her hand and called my mom.

I missed my party that night.

But when Ellie quietly asked, “Are you mad I made you wear Chase?”

I smiled.

“Not anymore, Skye.”
