The Earrings My Neighbor Was Never Supposed to Have

I noticed my gold earrings were missing after coming home from a family dinner.

They weren’t especially flashy, but they meant a lot to me. My husband’s grandmother had worn them for decades before passing them down through the family.

I searched everywhere.

Two days later, I got into the elevator with my neighbor, Lauren.

She was wearing them.

I stared so long that she finally laughed.

“Pretty, right? My boyfriend gave them to me.”

My stomach dropped.

I told her those earrings looked exactly like a family heirloom I had just lost.

Lauren’s smile disappeared.

That night, I told my husband, Matt.

The moment I mentioned Lauren’s boyfriend, his face changed.

Then he finally admitted something.

A week earlier, Matt had taken the earrings from my jewelry box without telling me. One clasp was loose, and he wanted to have them repaired as a surprise.

Before reaching the jeweler, he stopped by his coworker Jason’s apartment.

Jason was Lauren’s boyfriend.

Matt had left his jacket there for several hours.

When he later realized the earrings were missing, he panicked and kept quiet, hoping he could find them before I noticed.

The next morning, we confronted Jason.

After denying it twice, he finally admitted he had found the earrings in Matt’s pocket and assumed nobody would notice if he kept them.

Lauren immediately removed them and handed them back.

I was relieved.

But I was also furious.

Not only because Jason had taken them—but because Matt’s attempt to hide one mistake had turned a simple problem into something much worse.
