My Sister Humiliated Me at a Family BBQ — Then I Revealed the Truth About the Baby I Gave Up

I’m 36, and I’ve been helping my younger sister, Melissa, with her three children for years.
I pick them up from school, babysit on weekends, and take them places when she’s busy.
I’ve never asked her for money.
Last Saturday, we had a family barbecue at my parents’ house.
I was playing soccer with the kids when my uncle laughed and said, “You should have children of your own. You’d be a great mother.”
Before I could answer, Melissa spoke up.
“Really? Maybe you should ask her what happened to the baby she gave away.”
Everyone stopped talking.
I couldn’t believe she’d brought that up.
When I was nineteen, I gave birth to a daughter.
Her father had disappeared, I was struggling financially, and I wasn’t ready to raise a child.
After months of counseling, I chose an open adoption.
My daughter went to a loving couple who couldn’t have children.
I’ve stayed in contact with them ever since.
What Melissa didn’t tell everyone was that my daughter is now seventeen, and we have a relationship.
She knows exactly who I am.
I explained this calmly, then looked at my sister.
“You’ve trusted me to help raise your children for years. Why would you use mine to embarrass me?”
Melissa didn’t answer.
I left shortly afterward.
The next morning, she texted asking if I could babysit on Friday.
For the first time, I said no.
Not until we had a very different conversation.
