The Receptionist Scolded Me Over a Dog’s Blue Vest — Then I Learned What It Really Meant

I took my terrier, Milo, to the vet for his annual checkup last Tuesday.
The waiting room was crowded, and Milo was excited about seeing other dogs.
Then he spotted a golden retriever wearing a bright blue vest.
He immediately started pulling toward her.
Before I could shorten his leash, the receptionist called out, “Please keep your dog away from hers!”
I apologized and moved across the room.
Honestly, I was embarrassed.
Everyone seemed to understand something I didn’t.
A few minutes later, I got a chance to speak with the retriever’s owner.
I asked what the blue vest meant.
She smiled and turned her dog slightly so I could read the patch.
“NERVOUS RESCUE — PLEASE GIVE ME SPACE.”
Her dog’s name was Penny.
She explained that Penny had spent months in a crowded shelter and was still frightened when unfamiliar dogs approached suddenly.
They were slowly helping her feel comfortable around other animals.
I immediately apologized.
The woman shook her head.
“You didn’t know. You stopped your dog. That’s what matters.”
Before we left, the receptionist also apologized for snapping.
She’d been worried Penny might panic.
I learned something important that morning.
A blue vest doesn’t have one universal meaning. The color alone doesn’t tell you what a dog needs.
But when a dog is wearing a vest with instructions, it’s worth reading them.
And now I always ask before letting Milo approach another dog.
