My Daughter-in-Law Charged Me for Toilet Paper — What I Did Next Haunted Her Forever

Whenever I babysit my grandkids, my daughter-in-law makes me pay for the toilet paper I use. “This isn’t a free hotel!” she once snapped while my son stood there saying nothing. I always smiled, handed her the money, and let it go.
Then they left for a weekend getaway, and I decided to respond in my own way. I ordered pizza for the kids and arranged a full grocery delivery packed with premium snacks, drinks, fresh food, and organic brands—all paid for by me.
When they came home, the refrigerator and pantry were overflowing. The kids were thrilled, happily enjoying treats their mom usually calls “too expensive.” My daughter-in-law looked speechless, while my son seemed quietly embarrassed.
Before leaving, I neatly placed every receipt on the counter with a note explaining exactly how much I’d spent on “not being a freeloader.” The total was higher than what they usually spend on groceries for an entire month.
Since then, she hasn’t mentioned charging me for toilet paper again, although I can tell she isn’t happy about it. The kids, however, get excited every time I visit because they know I’ll bring something special.
I love my grandchildren with all my heart, but it hurts that I’m expected to pay for basic necessities while babysitting them for free. Now I’m trying to figure out how to stay close to them without letting their mother’s pettiness come between us.
