What I Found Beneath Three Years of Kitchen Grease

When I moved into my aunt’s old apartment, the kitchen looked fine from a distance. But the moment I touched the cabinets, my fingers stuck to the surface.
Years of cooking grease, dust, and smoke had formed a thick yellow film around the handles and above the stove. I sprayed everything with an all-purpose cleaner, but it only softened the grime and spread it into greasy streaks.
My neighbor, Claire, heard me complaining and came over with a bowl of warm water, a few drops of dish soap, and several microfiber cloths.
“Don’t attack everything at once,” she said. “Work in small sections and let the solution loosen the grease first.”
We placed a warm, damp cloth over each sticky area for a minute, then wiped gently. For the stubborn corners, we used a soft toothbrush. The grease began coming off in dark layers.
But when we cleaned the cabinet above the refrigerator, we uncovered a small envelope taped underneath.
Inside were several old photographs and a handwritten note from my late aunt. She had hidden them there years earlier, afraid they would be lost during a family dispute.
The photos showed my mother and aunt as children, smiling beside grandparents I had never met.
What began as an unpleasant cleaning job became an unexpected gift.
I finished the cabinets that afternoon, but I kept the envelope on the kitchen table. Sometimes, beneath years of neglected mess, there may be something worth remembering.
