After My Brother Died, He Gave Me Everything — Now His Daughter Says I Stole What Was Hers

After my brother died in a tragic accident, he left his entire inheritance to me. His daughter was only three years old at the time, and although I loved and supported her throughout her childhood, I was never her parent. I helped with gifts, important milestones, emotional support, and anything else I reasonably could.

For years, the inheritance was never discussed.

Then, at nineteen, as she prepared for college, she suddenly called me. There was no greeting or conversation. Her first words were, “Send me Dad’s money. I need it for college.”

I explained that the money legally belonged to me because that was my brother’s decision. He never specified that it should be held for her education or future expenses. I also told her that I needed those funds for my own son’s education.

She immediately hung up.

Soon after, I discovered she was telling relatives and friends that I was withholding money that rightfully belonged to her. People began calling me selfish, heartless, and accusing me of stealing from my niece.

What hurt most wasn’t the criticism—it was how quickly our relationship seemed to become about money. If she had approached me respectfully and asked for help, I may have considered supporting her in some way.

Now she refuses to speak to me directly, relying instead on social media posts and family gossip. I’m left wondering: am I truly wrong, or are people simply choosing sides without hearing the full story?
