Following the passing of my father, I welcomed the stepmother who was disliked by all — months later, she gave me a key that transformed everything.

After my father passed away, I found my stepmother living by herself in a small apartment, struggling to afford food.

My siblings cautioned me against helping her, as they had always thought she married Dad for financial reasons.

Yet, I couldn’t abandon her in her time of need, so I brought her into my home.

Initially, she hardly left the guest room. She expressed regret for everything and appeared frightened of being a burden.

However, my children were quite fond of her.

One day, my youngest gave her a cookie and softly said, "Grandma, you seem hungry."

Later, I discovered her in the kitchen, crying.

A few days after that, following a disagreement with my husband, she vanished.

I found her at a bus stop, holding her suitcase.

"I don’t fit in here," she murmured.

I wrapped my coat around her shoulders.

"You are family. And you are coming home."

Everything shifted after that.

My husband gradually grew to accept her. The kids cherished her stories, and our kitchen filled with her meals.

Months later, as her health deteriorated, she gave me a small brass key.

It unlocked an apartment she had secretly maintained.

Not long after, she passed away peacefully.

My husband and I transformed that apartment into a welcoming space for those in need of temporary housing.

My siblings never comprehended my choice.

But she imparted a lesson I will always remember: Family isn’t just about blood relations. Sometimes, it’s about those who refuse to abandon you.
