I Won the Lottery and Planned to Help My Parents — Then I Overheard What They Told My Son

I’ve worked hard my entire life, so when I won $186,000 in the lottery after taxes, I honestly couldn’t believe it.
My first thought was paying off our mortgage. My second was helping my parents.
They’ve always struggled with money. Dad made some bad investments, and Mom constantly borrowed from relatives.
I planned to give them $30,000 to clear their debts.
So I invited them over for dinner.
While preparing food, I heard Mom talking to my nine-year-old son in the kitchen.
“Tell Daddy you want Grandma and Grandpa to live closer,” she said.
My son asked why.
“Because then he’ll buy us a house. He has plenty of money now.”
I stopped what I was doing.
Then Dad added, “And don’t tell him we asked you. He listens to you more than us.”
My son sounded uncomfortable.
“But I don’t want to lie to Dad.”
That was enough.
I walked into the kitchen.
My parents immediately stopped talking.
I told them I’d heard everything.
Mom tried to explain that they were only joking. Dad said I was being selfish.
I told them I’d planned to pay off their debts, but that offer was gone.
Not because they wanted help.
Because they were willing to manipulate my child to get it.
They left angry.
Later, my son asked if he’d done something wrong.
I hugged him and said, “No, buddy. You did exactly the right thing.”
