The Bag My Ex Left at My Door

About a month after I ended things with my ex, Marcus, he showed up at my apartment without warning.
He looked nervous and held out a grocery bag.
Inside were a dozen eggs, some deli meat, and a few other basic groceries.
“I figured you could use these,” he said.
It felt strange, but I didn’t want an argument.
So I took the bag and shut the door.
Later that afternoon, I ran into a mutual friend at a coffee shop.
He laughed and said, “Marcus was bragging earlier that he finally got back at you.”
My stomach dropped.
“Got back at me how?”
His smile disappeared.
Apparently, Marcus had been telling people he had tampered with something in the grocery bag.
I left immediately.
Back home, I didn’t touch any of the food.
Instead, I inspected the packaging carefully.
One of the egg cartons had been opened and resealed with tape.
The deli meat package also looked disturbed.
I threw everything away.
Then I saved the messages my friend sent confirming what Marcus had said and told him never to come to my home again.
Later, Marcus claimed it had only been a joke.
Maybe it was.
Maybe he wanted to scare me more than actually hurt me.
But I didn’t care.
Once someone makes you wonder whether food they handed you is safe, trust is already gone.
I changed the locks that week.
And after that, I stopped accepting “peace offerings” from people who had already shown me they didn’t respect my boundaries.
