What Grandma Told My Daughter

I wasn’t trying to listen.
I was walking past my daughter Lily’s room when I heard her talking quietly on the phone.
Then she said something that stopped me cold.
“I’ll never forgive Mom for what she did.”
For the rest of the afternoon, I couldn’t concentrate.
Lily was only 10. We were close, or at least I thought we were.
That evening, I sat beside her on the bed.
“Sweetheart, I heard something earlier. If I’ve hurt you, I need you to tell me.”
She immediately looked away.
For almost a minute, she said nothing.
Then tears started running down her face.
“Grandma told me you gave away my baby brother.”
I felt like all the air had left the room.
Years earlier, before Lily was old enough to remember, I had been pregnant.
But there had never been a baby brother to give away.
I had lost the pregnancy late, and my husband and I had decided not to explain the details to Lily until she was older.
Somehow, my mother had turned that painful story into something completely different.
I held Lily’s hands and explained the truth as gently as I could.
She cried even harder.
“So you didn’t send him away?”
“No, sweetheart. I wanted him very much.”
The next day, I confronted my mother.
She claimed Lily had misunderstood her.
But I made one thing clear.
My daughter would never again be told pieces of my life without me present.
And that night, Lily climbed into my bed and hugged me tighter than she had in years.
