On Our 10-Year Marriage Anniversary, My Husband Proposed an Open Relationship — I Agreed, Only to Teach Him a Lesson

On our tenth anniversary, my husband Dave suggested something I never expected: opening our marriage.
He claimed I was always tired from taking care of the kids and said dating other women would somehow take pressure off me. His words hurt, especially when he described them as “real women.”
Instead of arguing, I surprised him.
“Fine,” I said. “But I get to date other people too.”
Dave agreed confidently, clearly assuming things would work better for him.
They didn’t.
Within days, he was struggling with dating apps, canceled plans, awkward conversations, and rejection. Meanwhile, I connected with Shawn, an attractive coworker who was genuinely interested in me.
After a great coffee date, I invited Shawn over for dinner and told Dave not to come home that evening.
Of course, Dave came home anyway.
The moment he saw Shawn sitting with me, laughing over dinner, his confidence disappeared.
After Shawn left, Dave finally admitted the truth. Seeing me with another man made him jealous and terrified of losing me.
I reminded him that he was the one who wanted this arrangement—and that his suggestion had deeply hurt me.
Dave apologized. He admitted he had taken our marriage for granted and asked for another chance.
We agreed to end the experiment, try counseling, and start making time for each other again.
Maybe our marriage wasn’t perfect, but for the first time in a long while, we were finally being honest.
