I Deleted My Boss’s Email Without Reading It—Three Days Later, My Former Coworker Knocked on My Door

I stared at the printout in disbelief as my old coworker handed it to me.
“You really didn’t read it?” he asked.
I shook my head.
After being fired without warning, I couldn’t bear the thought of opening another message from my boss. I assumed it was a cold goodbye or some corporate excuse, so I deleted it without a second thought.
He silently pointed to the first paragraph.
“After restructuring, today will be Sarah’s final day with our company. Her dedication over the past 18 years has been extraordinary. As a token of our gratitude, the board has approved a full year’s salary, extended health benefits, and priority placement in one of our partner companies. HR has been trying to reach her regarding the paperwork.”
My stomach dropped.
“I thought it was too painful to read,” I whispered.
My coworker smiled.
“They’ve been looking everywhere for you. Your phone number was disconnected, and you never answered the letters they mailed.”
The next morning, I walked into the office expecting embarrassment. Instead, the CEO greeted me with a handshake and apologized for how abruptly everything had happened. The restructuring wasn’t personal—it was financial.
Within two weeks, I had accepted a better position at one of their partner companies, with the same salary and even better hours.
That email I refused to read wasn’t the end of my story.
It was the beginning of a better one.
