Veterans Johnny Mercer and Andy McNab, along with former military leaders including Lord West and General Sir Patrick Sanders, defended the sacrifices of British service members and emphasized the enduring partnership between the UK and the United States.
Political figures also voiced concern. Shadow Defense Secretary James Cartlidge called the comments “deeply disrespectful,” while former Foreign Secretary James Cleverly urged greater recognition of the UK’s military contributions. Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s pride in its armed forces and highlighted the importance of honoring the shared sacrifices and mutual respect that have long defined the alliance between the two nations.
