For almost three years, I was involved with a man who was married.
I knew it was wrong.
But every time I tried to walk away, Marcus told me his marriage was already dead and that he was only staying because of the children.
I believed him.
I became obsessed with winning his attention.
I changed my hair because he once mentioned liking his wife’s color. I started dressing differently. I even learned to cook dishes he said he loved at home.
Eventually, Marcus left his wife.
At first, I thought I had gotten everything I wanted.
He called constantly.
He showed up at my apartment unexpectedly.
He wanted to know where I was, who I was talking to, and why I didn’t answer immediately.
At first, I mistook it for devotion.
Then one evening, I received a message from his ex-wife, Laura.
“I’m not contacting you to fight,” she wrote. “I think you deserve to know why I stopped trying to save the marriage.”
She sent screenshots.
Marcus had been doing the same thing to her for years—checking her phone, tracking her location, isolating her from friends, and accusing her of cheating whenever she wanted space.
Then Laura wrote something I couldn’t forget:
“He didn’t leave me because he loved you more. He left because I finally stopped letting him control me.”
I looked back at the previous months differently.
The constant calls.
The jealousy.
The questions.
Suddenly, none of it felt romantic.
I ended the relationship shortly afterward.
Marcus accused me of betraying him.
But for the first time, I didn’t change myself to keep him.
I simply walked away.
