New poll shows how Melania Trump compares in popularity to other First Ladies

A new public opinion survey is shedding light on how Americans view First Ladies—and the results reveal both admiration and deep political divides.

Among all figures, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis stands out as the most positively viewed. Her legacy continues to resonate across generations, seen as both culturally influential and historically significant.

Several others also received strong ratings, including Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Lady Bird Johnson, Barbara Bush, Michelle Obama, and Laura Bush. Many Americans associate them with stability, advocacy, and meaningful public service.

Michelle Obama, in particular, remains one of the most consistently well-regarded modern First Ladies, often praised for her work in health and education.

However, the survey highlights a clear shift when it comes to more recent figures. Melania Trump and Hillary Clinton both received net negative ratings, reflecting strong political polarization. Jill Biden also recorded a slightly negative score.

The findings suggest that while historical First Ladies are often viewed more positively over time, modern figures are judged through a more divided political lens.

Public perception, it seems, is shaped not just by legacy—but by the moment in which that legacy is judged.
