I Pretended to Be Asleep After a Fight — Then I Heard What My Husband Whispered

My husband and I had one of those arguments that starts over something small and somehow turns into every unresolved issue from the past year.
By the end of it, neither of us wanted to keep talking.
He went to sleep in the guest room, and I stayed in our bedroom.
But I couldn’t sleep.
I kept replaying the fight in my head, wondering whether we had said things we couldn’t take back.
Sometime after midnight, I heard the bedroom door open.
I kept my eyes closed.
My husband walked quietly across the room, probably looking for his phone charger.
Then everything went silent.
A few seconds later, I felt him standing beside the bed.
He leaned closer and whispered,
“I hate fighting with you. I just don’t know how to say I’m scared of losing you.”
My chest tightened.
He had no idea I was awake.
Then he gently pulled the blanket over my shoulder and walked out.
The next morning, neither of us mentioned what happened.
Instead, I made coffee and sat across from him.
I told him I didn’t want to keep winning arguments if it meant we were slowly losing each other.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he apologized.
So did I.
That night didn’t magically fix everything.
But for the first time in months, we stopped trying to prove who was right and started talking about what was actually hurting us.
