The Congratulations That Exposed a Secret

The day before, my boss, Nathan, had walked into our Monday meeting grinning.

“I’m going to be a dad,” he announced.

Everyone congratulated him, and he looked happier than I had ever seen him.

So when I spotted him at a restaurant the next evening sitting across from his wife, Claire, I thought saying hello would be harmless.

I walked over with a smile.

“Congratulations! Nathan told us the news yesterday.”

Claire blinked.

“What news?”

My stomach dropped.

Nathan stood up so quickly his chair scraped the floor.

He pulled me aside and whispered, “Claire isn’t pregnant.”

I stared at him.

Then Claire asked, “Then who is?”

Nathan went completely pale.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, he returned to the table and admitted the truth.

Months earlier, Nathan and Claire had agreed to pursue surrogacy after years of unsuccessful fertility treatments.

Only a few days before, they had learned that their surrogate was pregnant.

Nathan had been so excited that he told us at work before he and Claire had decided how they wanted to share the news publicly.

Claire wasn’t angry about the pregnancy.

She was hurt because Nathan had promised they would announce it together.

“I wanted one piece of this journey to belong to us first,” she said quietly.

Nathan apologized immediately.

I apologized too and tried to leave, but Claire actually laughed.

“You didn’t know,” she told me.

A week later, they sent us a photo of a tiny ultrasound image with one sentence underneath:

“Now you can officially congratulate us.”
