When my coworker Jenna invited my husband and me to her birthday dinner, I assumed it was just a small celebration with friends.
The restaurant was much fancier than I expected, but everyone seemed relaxed. Jenna ordered appetizers for the table, several bottles of wine, and even encouraged people to try dessert.
At no point did anyone mention how the bill would be handled.
My husband and I ordered modestly and left after wishing Jenna a happy birthday.
About an hour later, my phone buzzed.
Jenna had sent a group message.
“Thanks so much for coming! Your portion is $236, plus gratuity.”
I stared at the screen.
My husband thought I had misread it.
I hadn’t.
Instead of getting angry, I replied privately.
“Can you tell me how you calculated our amount?”
A few minutes later, she responded.
Apparently, the entire table bill had been divided equally among all the couples.
That included several rounds of cocktails we hadn’t touched, premium steaks other people ordered, and a bottle of champagne Jenna had chosen for herself.
I calmly explained that we were happy to pay for what we had personally ordered, plus our share of Jenna’s birthday dessert.
Then I sent her the amount based on our actual meal.
The next morning, another coworker approached me at the office.
“Did Jenna charge you too?”
Within an hour, I discovered nearly everyone had received the same message—and several people were furious.
By lunchtime, Jenna quietly sent the group a correction.
The dinner hadn’t been awkward while we were there.
The real birthday drama started after everyone went home.
