My MIL Refused to Call My Baby Her Grandchild, Claiming the Baby Wasn’t Her Son’s – I Agreed to a DNA Test, but When the Results Came, My Husband Said, ‘I Can’t Believe This Is Real’

My mother-in-law, Gianna, took one look at my newborn daughter Stella’s bright red hair and blue eyes and decided I had cheated.
Bryson and I had dark hair and brown eyes, so Gianna kept insisting Stella “looked nothing like him.” Eventually, she stopped calling Stella her granddaughter and demanded a DNA test.
What hurt most wasn’t her accusation.
It was Bryson saying, “Maybe if we just do the test, this ends.”
I agreed, but told them both they wouldn’t get to pretend afterward that their doubt had been harmless.
Days later, the results arrived.
Bryson opened the envelope, read it twice, and whispered, “I can’t believe this is real.”
The report showed a 99.99% probability that he was Stella’s father.
Then Gianna called.
When Bryson told her the result, she said, “Then it came back.”
Confused, we confronted her. She finally pulled out an old family album.
There was Bryson’s father as a teenager—with freckles and unmistakably copper-red hair.
Gianna had known red hair existed in the family all along.
She admitted Stella reminded her of Bryson’s father and of how cruelly she had treated him as a teenager.
Later, holding Stella, Gianna finally whispered, “My granddaughter.”
But Bryson’s apology couldn’t erase everything.
The DNA test proved he was Stella’s father.
It also proved how easily he had doubted me.
