I Followed My Son After Finding Diapers in His Backpack

My son, Caleb, was twenty and usually told me everything.

So when I found a grocery list tucked inside his backpack—formula, diapers, cereal, wipes—I immediately knew something was different.

When I asked him about it, his face went pale.

“Just helping somebody from work,” he muttered.

That explanation didn’t satisfy me.

That evening, Caleb left carrying two grocery bags.

I followed him.

He drove across town to a small apartment building and knocked on a door.

A little boy, maybe two years old, came racing outside.

“Daddy!”

My heart nearly stopped.

Then a young woman appeared behind him.

Before I could jump to conclusions, Caleb spotted me.

“Mom?”

The truth came out quickly.

The woman was Hannah, the widow of Caleb’s former coworker, Marcus, who had died unexpectedly months earlier.

Marcus had been like an older brother to Caleb.

Before he died, he had asked Caleb to check on Hannah and their little boy if anything happened.

The toddler had recently started calling Caleb “Daddy” because Caleb was the only man consistently showing up to fix things, bring groceries, and play with him.

Caleb was embarrassed to tell me because he feared I’d think he was wasting his savings.

Instead, I hugged him.

The following weekend, I went shopping with him.

He had been hiding something from me.

Just not the secret I feared.

My son wasn’t secretly building another family.

He was quietly helping a broken one stay standing.
