After a stressful week, I decided to take myself on a quiet solo date. I chose a cozy café and found a small table beside the window with a beautiful view of the park.
I ordered coffee and lunch, opened my book, and finally began to relax.
A few minutes later, a well-dressed couple walked in. They stared at my table, whispered to each other, and approached me.
“We’d like to sit here,” the woman said. “Could you move somewhere else?”
I politely explained that I had already ordered and preferred to stay.
They didn’t take it well.
The man sighed loudly while his partner accused me of being selfish because I was “only one person” occupying a table meant for two.
When I still refused, they called the manager and claimed the table had been reserved under their name.
The manager checked the booking system, then looked directly at them.
“This table is reserved,” he said, “but not for you.”
He turned toward me and smiled. Earlier that week, I had booked the café’s special window table as part of a birthday package for myself.
The couple had no reservation at all.
The manager asked them to stop disturbing me or leave. Embarrassed, they accepted a table near the kitchen.
My dessert arrived with a candle moments later.
I had gone there expecting a peaceful afternoon alone—and learned that being alone never means someone is less deserving of respect.
