For five Christmases, my mother-in-law, Carol, secretly handed me a porcelain doll.
She always waited until nobody else was around and asked me not to mention the gifts. I assumed they came from her private collection and that she wanted to avoid arguments with the rest of the family.
I displayed them in our guest room without thinking much about it.
Then one evening, my husband, Mark, walked into the room and saw all five dolls lined up on a shelf.
His face went completely pale.
“How long has my mother been giving you these?” he asked.
“Five years. Why?”
Without answering, Mark grabbed the dolls and threw them into the fireplace. I screamed at him to stop, but he watched until the porcelain cracked beneath the flames.
Then he finally explained.
The dolls had belonged to his younger sister, Anna, who disappeared when they were children. Before she vanished, Carol used those dolls as secret warnings whenever she wanted Mark to remain silent about something happening inside their home.
As the dolls burned, one split open. A tiny folded note fell from inside.
It contained a date, an address, and one chilling sentence:
“You promised never to tell her.”
We recovered similar notes from the remaining dolls and contacted the police.
