A Newborn’s First Bath and the Lesson We Didn’t Expect

The first time we gave our newborn son a bath at home, my husband proudly announced, “We should use the soap we got from the hospital!”

I froze.

“What soap?”

A moment later, he pulled out a tiny travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer and held it up like he’d found buried treasure.

We stared at each other, then burst into laughter.

Parenthood had barely begun, and we were already learning that sometimes humor is the only thing standing between confidence and complete panic.

Thankfully, we realized the mistake before using it and reached for the baby wash we had bought instead. As we gently bathed our son, watching his tiny hands move through the warm water, the moment felt perfect despite our inexperience.

Over the following weeks, we learned everything the hard way—how to swaddle properly, survive on little sleep, and handle endless diaper changes. My husband, who once worried about holding a baby, became a natural. I learned to let go of perfection and embrace the unexpected.

Months later, he held up that same little bottle of sanitizer and laughed.

“A keepsake,” he said. “To remind us where we started.”

And he was right. Parenthood isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about learning, laughing, and growing together—one small mistake at a time.
