My Stepdaughter Stole My Food to Feed Her Kids, I Don’t Want Her in My House Anymore

I’m 36, married to Joey (44) for 3 years. Together we have six kids between us. The last eight months have broken me—first my dad died, leaving debt, then my mom passed too. I covered both funerals, took unpaid time off, and now I’m barely surviving, relying on food banks.
My stepdaughter (20) lives with us rent-free with her two kids. I hoped for at least some understanding.
Yesterday, I woke up to find her cooking the last of our food—the only meal I had planned for all the kids. When I asked, she shrugged: “My kids were hungry.” I told her mine were too. She rolled her eyes and kept serving.
Something in me snapped. I told her to leave. Joey took her side, saying his grandkids could eat whatever they wanted in “his” house. I told him then they could all go.
The next day, they were gone—her, the kids, and Joey. He says I traumatized them and wants a divorce.
Now I’m left angry, heartbroken, and questioning everything.
Was I wrong?
I didn’t react over just food. I reacted to exhaustion, grief, and feeling completely unsupported in my own home.
