The Question I Wasn’t Ready to Hear

They put up the flat I rented for sale, so I had to move out. I cleaned every corner and left. The next day, the landlady called. I got scared that they’d found something broken. But she started to thank me for cleaning the place.

And then she suddenly said, “How come you’re… so careful with a place that isn’t even yours anymore?”

For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.

I laughed nervously and told her it was just how I was raised. My parents always said that if you borrow something — even temporarily — you should return it better than you found it.

There was a pause on the phone.

Then she said something I didn’t expect.

“You’re the first tenant in ten years who left the apartment like this. Most people leave trash, broken things, or just disappear without a word.”

I didn’t know whether to feel proud or embarrassed.

She continued, “The buyers are coming tomorrow to see the flat. Honestly, you made my life so much easier.”

Another pause.

Then she added quietly, “If you’re still looking for a place… my sister has an apartment nearby. After seeing how you treated mine, I’d trust you with hers in a heartbeat.”

I smiled.

Funny how sometimes the smallest things — like cleaning up before you leave — can open doors you never expected.
