6 Alarming Effects of Sleeping Less Than 7 Hours a Night, According to Recent Studies
We’re often told to get at least seven hours of sleep a night, but stress, insomnia, and daily disruptions make that difficult for many people. According to research by sleep technology company Simba, lack of sleep doesn’t just make you tired — it visibly affects your body.
Sleep deprivation raises cortisol, the stress hormone, which can worsen skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, causing irritation, redness, and dullness. Poor sleep also reduces blood flow to the skin, stripping it of its natural glow.
The study found links between insufficient sleep and brittle nails, weight gain, bloating, and increased hunger due to hormonal imbalances. Cold hands and feet and digestive issues like constipation were also common.
Experts recommend 7–9 hours of sleep for healthy adults to support overall wellbeing.
