My Mom Had Never Met My Fiancé — Then She Showed Up at Our Wedding With a Stranger

My mom lived several states away, so she hadn’t met my fiancé, Nathan, before we got engaged.
We’d been dating for almost two years, and I thought I knew everything about him.
A week before our wedding, Mom asked me to send her a picture.
I did.
A few minutes later, she called and asked for his full name.
I thought it was strange, but I answered.
After that, she became distant.
Two days before the wedding, she texted that she might arrive late.
Then she stopped answering.
I was upset, but the wedding went ahead.
We were standing at the altar when the doors suddenly opened.
Mom walked in with another woman.
Nathan looked at them and immediately stepped backward.
The woman started crying.
Then she said something I’ll never forget.
“I’m his wife.”
Apparently, Mom had recognized Nathan from photographs belonging to a former coworker.
She’d contacted the woman to make sure she wasn’t mistaken.
Nathan had told me he was divorced.
He wasn’t.
They had separated, but their divorce hadn’t been finalized. He’d also been telling her that he was trying to repair their marriage.
Mom had spent days confirming everything and arranging for her to come.
I turned to Nathan.
He didn’t even try to deny it.
I took off my engagement ring and walked out with my mother.
I never expected my wedding day to end that way.
But I’m grateful it ended before I said yes.
