I Refused to Tip a Rude Waiter on Our Anniversary — The Next Morning, I Found an Extra Charge

For our third anniversary, I took my girlfriend, Emily, to a restaurant we’d been wanting to try for months.

We made reservations two weeks ahead.

Unfortunately, our waiter seemed annoyed with us from the moment we arrived.

He barely acknowledged us, forgot our drinks, and made us move to another table because he’d apparently mixed up the reservations.

We tried not to let it ruin our evening.

The food was good, at least.

When the $195 bill arrived, I paid with my card and left the tip line blank, writing zero on the total.

The waiter returned and pointed at the receipt.

“You forgot the gratuity.”

I told him I hadn’t forgotten anything.

He rolled his eyes, took the receipt, and walked away.

The next morning, I checked my banking app.

The restaurant had charged me $235.

I immediately called.

The manager asked if I still had my receipt.

Luckily, I’d taken a picture because I track my expenses.

I emailed it to him.

Twenty minutes later, he called back.

Someone had added a $40 tip to the restaurant’s copy after I’d signed it.

He apologized, refunded the difference, and said they were investigating.

Then he admitted they’d received two similar complaints that month.

I wasn’t looking to get anyone fired.

I just wanted to pay the amount I’d actually approved.

Now I photograph every restaurant receipt before leaving.
