My Son Chose to Live With His Dad — Then His Teachers Started Calling Me

After my divorce, my fourteen-year-old son, Ethan, told me he wanted to live with his father.

It hurt, but I refused to make him choose sides.

I told him my door would always be open.

For the first few months, everything seemed fine.

Then his teachers began calling.

Ethan was falling asleep during class. His grades were dropping, assignments were missing, and one teacher said he looked exhausted almost every morning.

The next day, I drove straight to his school.

When Ethan climbed into my car, my heart sank.

He had dark circles under his eyes and looked like he hadn’t slept properly in weeks.

I asked what was happening.

He stared at the floor for a long time.

Then he whispered, “Dad barely comes home anymore.”

His father had started spending most nights with his new girlfriend, leaving Ethan alone.

Worse, Ethan had been cooking for himself, doing laundry, and pretending everything was fine because his dad told him not to “cause drama.”

I was furious, but I didn’t criticize his father in front of him.

I simply asked, “Do you want to come home?”

Ethan started crying and nodded.

That evening, we packed his things.

A month later, his grades were improving and he was sleeping normally again.

One night he apologized for choosing his dad.

I hugged him and said, “You never have to apologize for trying to love both your parents.”
