My Husband Took Away My Car Keys to Keep Me from Meeting My Friends and Make Me Stay Home with Our Child, Saying, ‘Moms Don’t Get Free Time’ – Then His Mom Put Him in His Place

My husband took my car keys to stop me from meeting my best friend. His excuse? “Moms don’t get free time.”
Since our daughter Ava was born, I’d handled everything—night feedings, diapers, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. My husband, Glen, barely helped.
One Saturday, I planned a two-hour coffee date with my friend Sasha. Glen had the day off, but when I reached for my keys, he refused.
“You wanted a baby. Stay home with her.”
Furious, I called his mother, Ellen.
Twenty-five minutes later, she arrived and asked Glen to step outside.
Moments later, I heard him shouting.
Ellen had taken his car keys!
“Give them back!” he demanded.
“Funny how unpleasant it feels when someone controls whether you can leave,” she replied.
Then she made him return mine.
When I asked whether she’d watch Ava, Ellen shook her head.
“No. Her father will.”
I went out while Glen stayed home with our daughter.
Three hours later, I returned to find him exhausted, holding Ava asleep against his chest.
For the first time, he understood.
Over the following weeks, he started helping with feedings, baths, and household chores.
Things weren’t perfect, but they were changing.
And the next time I picked up my keys to leave, nobody stopped me.
