My Neighbor Warned Me About a Man in My Yard — Months Later, Police Showed Me the Truth

At 3 a.m., my phone rang.
It was my neighbor, Mark, and he sounded panicked.
“Wake up! There’s a man in your backyard!”
I jumped out of bed, grabbed a flashlight, and ran outside.
The yard was empty.
I checked the gate, the shed, and the side of the house, but found nothing.
The next morning, things got stranger.
My father’s Rolex, which he had left with me while traveling, was gone from the bedroom dresser.
There were no broken windows and no obvious signs of forced entry.
I felt sick.

Mark suggested we both install security cameras, so we did.
For months, nothing happened.
Then one afternoon, two police officers came to my door.
They were investigating several burglaries in our neighborhood.
One officer showed me footage recovered from another house.
I froze.
The man walking through that backyard was Mark.
Police said they had found stolen jewelry and electronics in his garage.
Then they told me something even worse.
They believed Mark had called me that night to lure me outside while someone else entered through an unlocked side door.
The warning had never been meant to protect me.
It had been part of the plan.
A week later, my father’s watch was recovered.
I never looked at a “helpful neighbor” quite the same way again.
