My Daughter Packed Her Bags the Day After My Fiancée Moved In — Then I Learned Why

My daughter Stephanie had lived with me since her mother passed away ten years ago.
Our home had always been hers too, and I had repeatedly told her she could stay as long as she wanted.
Recently, I got engaged to Ella, my girlfriend of three years.
Because her rent had increased, we decided she and her four children would move in with us.
Stephanie was surprisingly supportive.
She even offered the room she used for painting and recording voiceovers to Ella’s daughters. The boys took my adult son’s old bedroom.
I was proud of how welcoming she was.
The morning after everyone moved in, I left work early and bought a cake to celebrate our new beginning.
But when I opened the front door, the cake nearly slipped from my hands.
Stephanie was standing beside two suitcases.
“What’s going on?” I asked.

Her eyes filled with tears.
She told me Ella had said the house needed to “feel like her family’s home now” and suggested Stephanie should start looking for somewhere else to live.
I couldn’t believe it.
When Ella came downstairs, I asked if it was true.
She tried to explain that Stephanie was an adult and needed independence.
I stopped her.
“This house belongs to my daughter as much as it belongs to me.”
That evening, Ella and her children packed instead.
Stephanie stayed.
The engagement didn’t.
