My Daughter Banned Me From Her School’s Father-Daughter Dance, but I Went Anyway and Was Stunned by Who She Was Dancing With — Story of the Day

My 13-year-old daughter Sophie told me not to attend her school’s father-daughter dance.

“You’re not my dad,” she snapped.

Those words crushed me. I had raised her since she was a baby, but lately she had become distant and secretive.

Against her wishes, I went to the dance anyway.

When I entered the gym, I froze.

Sophie was dancing with my brother, Richard.

Her biological father.

Years earlier, Richard had abandoned her on our doorstep and disappeared from her life. Sophie had somehow learned the truth and had been secretly talking to him.

I pulled Richard outside.

“Why are you here after all these years?”

His answer made my blood boil.

“Money. Give me what I want, and I’ll leave Sophie alone.”

Before I could respond, Sophie appeared behind us.

“You don’t want me?” she cried. “You only wanted money?”

Richard barely reacted.

I pretended to agree to pay him and brought him back to my house.

But the police were already waiting.

Richard had stolen money from me and our mother before disappearing years earlier, and I was finished protecting him from the consequences.

As police took him away, Sophie broke down.

“I thought he wanted to be my dad.”

I hugged her tightly.

“He may be your biological father, but I’m the one who stayed.”

She wrapped her arms around me.

“I’m sorry, Dad.”

And this time, that word meant everything.
