My Parents Wanted Grandpa’s Money — Then I Read His Final Letter

When my grandfather passed away, I was heartbroken. He had always been the one person who made me feel heard and supported.
A few weeks after the funeral, I learned he had left me some money.
My parents immediately said it should go into a “family fund.” They wanted to use part of it for overdue bills and the rest for my brother’s tuition.
I said no.
Grandpa had left it to me, and I wanted to respect that.
Mom became furious.

“If you won’t share with your family,” she said, “don’t expect us to treat you like family.”
I left feeling guilty, but I still refused to hand over the money.
A few days later, my aunt asked me to meet her. She handed me an envelope with Grandpa’s handwriting on it.
Inside was a letter.
He wrote that he knew my parents might pressure me after he was gone. He said he had watched me put everyone else first for years while my brother was always given priority.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
“Use this money for your own future,” he wrote. “For once, don’t let anyone make you feel guilty for choosing yourself.”
I sat there crying.
Grandpa hadn’t just left me an inheritance.
He had left me one final reminder that my life mattered too.
