The Ring Hidden in My Anniversary Dinner

My husband, Daniel, and I had been married for fourteen years.
For our anniversary, he took me to a nice restaurant.
I had secretly hoped for something romantic.
Instead, he handed me a boxed set of kitchen utensils.
I tried not to look disappointed.
Then Daniel excused himself to use the restroom.
A waiter suddenly placed a salad in front of me.
“I didn’t order this,” I said.
He lowered his voice.
“Don’t eat it. There’s a surprise inside.”
I started digging carefully through the salad.
At the bottom was a small velvet pouch.
Inside was a diamond ring.
For one second, I thought Daniel had finally surprised me.
Then he returned.
The moment he saw the ring, all the color drained from his face.
“Where did you get that?”
I froze.
The waiter walked back over.
Then he looked at Daniel and said, “Sir… wasn’t this supposed to go to table twelve?”
Daniel went completely silent.
Across the restaurant, a younger woman was sitting alone.
She kept staring at us.
I turned toward my husband.
“Who is she?”
He tried to explain.
The truth came out slowly.
Daniel had ordered the ring days earlier.
Not for me.
He had been planning to propose to the woman at table twelve after telling her he was separated.
He had brought me to the same restaurant that night because he thought he could keep both plans separate.
The waiter had mixed up the tables.
I looked at the kitchen utensils sitting beside me.
Then at the diamond ring.
Fourteen years of marriage suddenly made perfect sense.
I didn’t throw the ring.
I didn’t scream.
I simply placed it back on the table, picked up my coat, and left.
Sometimes the wrong delivery arrives at exactly the right table.
