The Warning Hidden Inside the Pad

I had been dating Eric for about three months when we went out for dinner one Friday night.

Everything seemed normal.

Halfway through the meal, a woman walking past our table suddenly stopped beside me.

She pushed a wrapped sanitary pad into my hand.

“You need this,” she said quietly.

I was confused.

“I’m fine.”

She gave me a serious look.

“Just take it.”

Then she walked away.

Eric laughed and said she was probably embarrassed and had mistaken me for someone else.

But something felt wrong.

I excused myself and went to the restroom.

Inside the wrapper, someone had written two words in red ink:

CHECK PHONE.

My heart started racing.

When I returned, Eric had left his phone on the table while he went to pay.

A message flashed across the screen.

“Did she notice me?”

The sender’s name matched the woman who had handed me the pad.

Before I could process it, she appeared near the restroom entrance and motioned for me to come over.

She told me Eric had been dating her sister.

Not months ago.

Now.

Her sister had discovered my photo on his phone and realized he had been seeing both of us.

The woman recognized me from the pictures.

She didn’t want to cause a scene at the table, so she found the fastest way to warn me privately.

When Eric returned, I didn’t yell.

I simply asked, “Who is Natalie?”

His face changed instantly.

That was enough.

I left the restaurant alone.

The strangest warning I had ever received turned out to be exactly the one I needed.
