The Truth About Why My Best Friend Moved In

When my best friend, Nicole, called me crying and said her marriage had fallen apart, I told her she could stay with us.
She arrived with two suitcases and looked completely devastated.
My husband, Jason, didn’t complain.
In fact, he was almost too understanding.
For the first couple of weeks, I didn’t think much of it.
Then I ran into Nicole’s husband, Mark, at a grocery store.
I awkwardly told him Nicole was staying with me.
He stared at me.
Then he laughed.
“Wait… she told you I left her?”
I felt my stomach tighten.
Mark explained that he hadn’t kicked Nicole out.
She had left after he confronted her about secretly messaging another man.
I asked who.
He hesitated.
Then he said Jason’s name.
My husband.
I wanted to believe he was lying.
So I went home and said nothing.
That evening, I watched.
Nicole seemed nervous around Jason.

Jason avoided looking at me.
Later, when both of them were upstairs, I checked the old tablet we kept linked to Jason’s account.
The messages were there.
Months of them.
Flirting.
Complaints about me.
Plans to spend more time together.
Nicole hadn’t come to my house because she needed somewhere safe.
She had come because she wanted easier access to my husband.
I confronted them both that night.
Nicole left immediately.
Jason tried to explain that “nothing physical had happened.”
That didn’t matter.
The betrayal had already happened long before I found the messages.
I lost a friend that night.
And not long after, I ended the marriage too.
