The Day My Husband Came Back

When my husband, Derek, was offered a job across the country, he expected me to say yes immediately.
But my parents were getting older, and I was helping them more every month.
I told him I couldn’t just leave.
He accused me of holding him back.
A few weeks later, he moved without me.
Then came the photos.
New apartment.
New city.
Eventually, a new girlfriend.
I was devastated, but I rebuilt my life.
Nearly a year later, someone knocked on my door.
Derek stood there with a suitcase.
He smiled like we had simply taken a break.
“Don’t look so surprised. You always knew I’d come back.”
I couldn’t believe the arrogance.
Then he glanced past me.
His expression changed.
Sitting in my living room was his former boss.
Derek went pale.
Months earlier, that boss had contacted me because Derek had listed me as an emergency reference on old paperwork.

We ended up talking.
That was how I learned the “dream job” hadn’t worked out the way Derek claimed.
He had been fired after repeatedly missing work and blaming everyone around him.
The new relationship had ended too.
Now he had returned expecting me to rescue him.
His former boss stood up.
Derek looked between us.
“What is he doing here?”
I smiled.
“He’s helping my father with a consulting project.”
That was true.
Nothing romantic was happening.
But Derek’s face told me he had expected to walk back into the same life he abandoned.
I stepped onto the porch and handed him the suitcase he had set down.
“You came back,” I said.
“That doesn’t mean I was waiting.”
Then I closed the door.
