The Secret Behind Our Engagement Photo

My wife, Elena, died unexpectedly after fifteen years of marriage.
The funeral felt unreal.
When I finally came home, the house was completely silent.
I wandered into the living room and picked up our framed engagement photo.
It had always been one of my favorites.
We were standing beside a lake, laughing, both of us looking ridiculously young.
Then I noticed something strange.
Behind the photo, near the corner of the frame, was a tiny folded edge of paper.
I opened the backing.
A letter fell onto my lap.
My name was written across the front in Elena’s handwriting.
I stared at it for several minutes before opening it.
She had written it years earlier.
The first line said:

“If you’re reading this without me beside you, then I ran out of time.”
My hands started shaking.
Elena explained that after a health scare years ago, she had begun hiding small letters in places she knew I would eventually find.
Not because she expected to die soon.
Because she wanted me to have pieces of her voice if life ever changed suddenly.
Inside that first letter, she reminded me of our first apartment, our worst vacation, and the night I proposed.
Then she wrote:
“Don’t turn our marriage into the place where your life ended.”
At the bottom was a clue.
It led me to another letter hidden inside an old cookbook.
Then another.
There were twelve altogether.
I didn’t find them all at once.
And maybe that was the point.
For months after Elena died, whenever grief became unbearable, another small piece of her somehow found its way back to me.
