After Our Wedding, My MIL Started Collecting the Gift Envelopes from Our Table – I Didn’t Expect What She Did Next

At our wedding reception, my cousin quietly asked:

“Is your mother-in-law supposed to be taking the cards?”

I turned around and saw Linda emptying our wedding envelopes into her tote bag.

When I confronted her, she said, “We paid for half the wedding. I’m just holding on to our half.”

I was furious.

My mom, Patricia, had also paid for half, but she stopped me from making a scene.

The next morning, she explained why.

“If you fight with her in front of 200 people, that’s what everyone will remember. We’ll handle it differently.”

So Mom invited Linda, her husband, Eric, and me to dinner.

After dessert, she brought out the wedding budget.

“Was there ever an agreement that parents would be reimbursed from the gifts?”

Linda claimed there was.

Her husband immediately said, “No, there wasn’t.”

Then Eric finally spoke.

“Mom, those gifts were for us.”

Linda returned every envelope—but several had already been opened.

That was when Eric snapped.

“You don’t open our mail because you helped pay for the wedding. If you give us something, it has to actually be a gift.”

Linda accused him of choosing his wife over his mother.

Eric answered:

“I’m choosing my marriage.”

Later, Mom told me why she stayed calm.

“I didn’t want you to win an argument. I wanted Eric to see the problem.”

And he finally did.
